Discord Smackdown

Discord, a relatively new application that opened its doors on May 13, 2015, is a highly customizable messaging platform that allows for direct communication between users in private messages and more open, community based communication in Discord servers. Its main draw is its use as a multipurpose tool that allows voice calls, video calls, text based chat, screen sharing, and file sharing. These features are available in both private messages and Discord servers, but Discord servers add an element of organization to communication by dividing topic up into different "channels". Then, by using features such as "roles", Discord servers can divide their communities access to channels based on their interest in certain topics, resulting in a streamlined and organized experience for even the biggest of communities. Be sure to watch my full smackdown on Discord to get a better idea of how its incredibly customizable and configurable servers make it ideal for a variety of communities.

I don't need to imagine how Discord could be used in my future career in Esports commentary, because my knowledge of the platform comes mostly from how I've used it to develop my professional career. The private messaging and contact system is useful for building a personal network, as I can find other broadcasters in commentary focused servers and reach out to them directly. However, the main draw still lies with servers, as Esports based servers are a great opportunity to meet other like minded people in channels relating to our interests. Beyond networking, Discord is also the platform most people run Esports broadcasts though at an amateur level. Anyone can use the voice call and screen sharing features to bring together commentators and camera operators into one channel where we run production, which I've done countless times. Regardless, even though Discord was created for gamers like me, the services it provides can be applied to almost anything, so I'd wholeheartedly recommend you see how it can benefit your career today!

  10. OMG, I used to work at local Chick-Fil-A near me, and we had teams and group chats. But not everyone had the same kind of phones and so it was hard to use rely on group chats all the time, so we did use discord. This app is very useful!

  11. I use discord a lot when I follow artists on patreon, many professionals give you updates on projects and allow critique rooms on their servers. I think this is a useful tool for any person in the arts or running a page.

  12. Hi Miles,

I am not a big fan of messenger apps but, I think it's awesome they have this available. I think its awesome that you have a unique ID so that no one can impersonate you.

  15. Really liked your use of pictures and actually including your video in the blog post and not just a link! I have heard of Discord before as my friends use it, but I am not big on video games so I have not personally got a chance to use it. It's definitely a nice tool that you don't always have to use on video games. Thanks for sharing!
